NetflixĮLLE Decor: What was your reaction when the producers approached you to host a reality competition show about.glassblowing? Ī contestant at work on Season 2 of Blown Away. Here, the show’s presenter, Nick Uhas, a YouTube science content maker, and its resident evaluator and host, Katherine Gray, a glass artist and art professor, discuss the unlikely success of Blown Away. The show follows 10 glassblowing contestants, gathered in what is deemed the largest hot shop in North America (it’s outside of Toronto) and competing for the title of “Best in Glass.” The winner receives $60,000 and a residency at the Corning Museum of Glass (the museum is exhibiting pieces from all 10 competitors to coincide with this new season). Blown Away-the second season premieres today on Netflix-falls sturdily into the latter category. And then there are fields that have not been previously associated with the prying lenses of videographers but end up being unexpectedly fertile territory for unscripted TV drama. Consider the endless riffs on fashion ( America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, Next in Fashion), cooking ( Top Chef, Chopped), and baking ( Nailed It!, The Great British Baking Show) that have found enthusiastic and loyal audiences. It won’t be for everyone, and the winner will be a huge point of contention for many people, but the ride to get there is certainly enjoyable enough to recommend.Certain disciplines are such natural fits with a reality-television format that they seem to beg for the voyeuristic presence of multiple camera angles. Season 2 of Blown Away is pretty much more of the same and that goes right down to the final winner too. Whether it be representing minorities, standing up for women’s rights or shining the spotlight on mental health, each of the competitors have a unique take on life and understanding more about them along the way is part of the fun. Thankfully, the competitors we meet along the way have big, bubbly personalities and bring a different mentality to the field. I won’t go into specifics but given this is a competition about glass-blowing, this final reveal will undoubtedly be a hot topic for many people. Well it’s fair to say the same will probably be said here too, and personally I feel like the wrong person was selected again. One of the big criticisms many people had with the first season was the overall winner. Of course, along the way we also learn more about our 10 competitors too including their backstories and what they’re doing all of this for. Along the way, there are ten timed challenges that test competitors and push them to their glass-blowing limits.Īlong the way we see the competitors molding, sculpting and blowing their way to victory, designing and creating beautiful and artistic glass show-pieces for the judges to assess. There’s also a lucrative residency at the Corning Museum of Glass too so there’s lots to play for.įor those unaware, the format here is split across 10 episodes, each clocking in at around 30 minutes or so. With a couple of familiar faces popping up along the way, 10 competitors compete for the life-changing prize of $60,000. With many people asking for a follow-up, Netflix deliver more of the same for a second season that takes everything that made the first season great and repeats the same format. While Blown Away didn’t blow away its reality TV competitors in 2019, it did gain a fair amount of traction from audiences when this unique show dropped on the streaming platform.
